"Just one more thing..." Do you remember that famous catchphrase from Lieutenant Columbo, played brilliantly by actor Peter Falk? He was one of the most important TV and movie stars of his day, and he inspired a generation of detective shows.
Falk lost an eye at the age of three because of a malignant tumor, and because of that disability, he was rejected from the armed services. He nevertheless joined the US Merchant Marines at the end of World War II and served as a cook and mess boy. He later applied for a job with the CIA but was rejected because he had joined a union while serving in the Merchant Marines. It wasn't until he was 30 years old that he ultimately decided to pursue a career in acting.
Most people do not know or remember that Falk's mother, Madeline Falk, was a victim of elder financial abuse, crimes which were carried out by her caregiver and that Falk worked to prosecute that wrongdoer. Elder financial abuse was a matter about which Falk was passionate. In 2003, using his celebrity status, Falk made a public service video in which he urged banks and other front-line professionals to lead the defense against financial exploitation of the elderly. You can find that YouTube video online.
Ironically, Falk made that video at the age of 76, and a few short years later he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. His life, and then his estate, quickly became embroiled in its own controversy - not elder financial abuse, but another common and related problem we see every day in our law practice: a stepmother/stepchild dispute...

Michael Hackard, founder of Hackard Law, has represented California families in estate disputes for over four decades, including cases throughout Los Angeles, where Peter Falk lived and worked as one of television's most iconic actors. Falk's famous "Just one more thing..." catchphrase as Lieutenant Columbo made him a Hollywood legend, but his own family's estate dispute illustrates conflicts Hackard Law litigates daily throughout California.
Peter Falk's personal history reflects resilience—losing an eye at age three to malignant tumor, rejection from armed services, serving as Merchant Marine cook during World War II, CIA rejection due to union membership, and finally pursuing acting at age 30. Most people don't know Falk's mother, Madeline Falk, became an elder financial abuse victim, crimes perpetrated by her caregiver. Falk worked to prosecute that wrongdoer, making elder financial abuse a passionate cause.
In 2003, Falk created a public service video urging banks and professionals to defend against elderly financial exploitation. Ironically, at 76, just years after making that video, Falk was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. His life and estate quickly became embroiled in controversy—not elder financial abuse, but another common problem: stepmother/stepchild disputes.
These conflicts plague families throughout California—from Los Angeles entertainment industry estates to Sacramento family homes, San Francisco wealth to Silicon Valley tech fortunes. When parents remarry, second spouses often control estate assets, excluding biological children from deceased parents' legacies. California families in Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Pasadena, and throughout Los Angeles County face identical scenarios: stepmothers or stepfathers controlling trusts, limiting information access, refusing distributions, or amending estate plans to disinherit stepchildren.
Hackard Law exclusively represents plaintiffs—biological children, excluded beneficiaries, and victims of trust manipulation—never wrongdoers. For families facing stepparent estate disputes anywhere in California, particularly Los Angeles and Southern California, call Hackard Law at 213-357-5200 or 916-313-3030. Decades of experience in family estate conflicts means proven advocacy. Hackard Law: Attorneys Making a Difference.
