Peter Roselle: Why Do the Heathen Rage? (Psalm 2:1)
Psalm 2:1 (KJV) says, “Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?” This service was held on 1/24/2021 during the tenth month of COVID-19 lockdown and a very contentious presidential election. The rage in America now represents a rejection of the traditional values of Judeo-Christian teaching and practice. Instead of seeing God’s Word as the path to a flourishing life, unbelievers reject His Word because they do not want to be told what to do. The “vain thing” that they imagine is that they are better off living outside the boundaries of God’s Word (also called sin).

In John 17, when Jesus was praying to the Father, this is also a very strong word for right now, for today. Jesus was not afraid of the world. He was fearless; He set his face like flint to go be executed. He's not a wimpy Jesus and we're not supposed to be wimpy Christians either. It takes a lot of courage to speak the truth in love. Jesus is speaking to the father now and says, "I've given them your word," talking about us, right? Did you know that he was talking about you, 2,000 years ago, talking about us. "I've given them your word and the world has hated them."

Why, why does the world hate us? You can find the clues in Psalm 2:1-3:
1 Why do the nations rage, and the people plot a vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,
3 “Let us break Their bonds in pieces and cast away Their cords from us.”

Why did the heathen rage and the people plot a vain thing against the Lord and against his anointed one The world is basically saying, “Get off my back, stop telling me how I'm supposed to live, I want to do whatever I want to do.” It is true that we are all free to do what we want, but our advice is that you will prosper if you learn how to live within the boundaries that God sets for you. His ways are way high above our ways. Your life is going to dramatically improve when you live in obedience to God’s Word and His Holy Spirit.

Jesus goes on to say: "I don't pray that you should take them out of the world but that you should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I'm not of the world. Sanctify them by your truth." We can be sanctified by the truth of the word of God; made holy, as we live in an unholy culture.

I don't talk much about critical race theory or some of the other unfamiliar terms that are going to start to be popping up, but I have educated myself on the topics of the Woke movement. The pertinent point Jesus is making here is “sanctify them by your truth.” As we are walking out our lives in the very defiling atmosphere of the world, God sanctifies us to be holy people. Not because God pulled us out, but because God allows us to be here with a purpose - to be a light in the midst of the darkness. That takes courage.

John 17:19 says, "As you sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world."
We're sent out into the world. Why? Because the light belongs in the darkness. All through church history, as cultures have deteriorated, the church shines brighter. The darker the culture gets, the brighter that we shine.

In John 20 we see similar language. Jesus appeared to the disciples the evening of the Resurrection. They were locked in a room in fear and He appeared to them.

John 20 – Defeating Death, Releasing Destiny
19-20 … Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side.
21 [He] said to them again, “Peace to you!
As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.”
22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

The father has sent me, so I send you. We have gotten confused into thinking that the Bible is not pertinent to our day-to-day living. Let's just break that lie off right now. We have to have a voice in the culture or else we're going to continue to see just wicked things going on.
