The gap between what potential employees know and what careers require is a grim reality for many employers across the U.S. What can be done?

The National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) developed the two-generation family learning model that takes direct aim at the skills gap. Parents and children are serving together to address community issues as they learn skills that will advance parents in the workforce and in their goals for economic self-sufficiency.

It’s called Family Service Learning and it teaches critical thinking, problem solving, leadership, and increased confidence. NCFL’s model is a comprehensive approach to address education, unemployment, and family strengthening.

In 2017, half of participating adults got a better job and 53 percent upgraded their skills to earn more money after gaining experience with 40 out of 42 career and technical education skills.

Parents and children investigate their own communities to determine which problems they want to solve. In the process, children view their parents as role models who organize, lead, and execute Family Service Learning projects that make their communities cleaner and better places to raise a family.
