Marken is a small village to the northeast of Amsterdam. The traditional colored wooden houses are one of the most attractive aspects of this former island.

Once an island in the Zuiderzee, Marken is very small with less than 2,000 residents. The main attractions of this picturesque village are its typical colorful houses, its well-kept gardens, the farm animals, the port, canals, bridges, and the church. It'll take you very little time to discover it.

Volendam, Marken is also very easy to get to either by bus or by car (if you rent a car). The buses depart every 30 minutes approximately from Amsterdam Centraal Station​

Marken is a village in the municipality of Waterland in the province of North Holland, Netherlands. It had a population of 1,745 as of 2021, and occupies a peninsula in the Markermeer. It was, until 1957, an island in the former Zuiderzee. The characteristic wooden houses of Marken are a tourist attraction.

The island appeared as a location in the 1970 film Puppet on a Chain. In 1983, the Marker Museum about the history of the island was opened.[7] Marken was a separate municipality until 1991, when it was merged into Waterland.

The beautiful peninsula of Marken is surrounded by the Gouwzee and the Markermeer. Until 1957 Marken was an isolated island. Today, Marken is connected to the mainland by a dam. First in the Zuiderzee and later in the IJsselmeer. In the thirteenth century the first inhabitants were monks from Friesland. Because the sea regularly flowed over the island, the ground was extremely fruitful. At that time, the inhabitants mainly lived from livestock breeding and agriculture. Later, the population of Marken also lived from fishing, although agriculture remained the most important source of income.
