The creation of the PRO ARTE TRIO a few years ago was a natural outcome of the meeting and collaboration between three musicians with very considerable experience as soloists and chamber music players. They realized the creative possibilities that the repertoire for violin, viola and cello offers, and how it enhances the link between mutual musical feeling and imagination. Their repertoire provides a varied program of concerts featuring music from the Baroque era to the present time, both for string trio alone and in association with other instruments.

Three String trios op.9 writen in 1798 were a significant milestone in Beethoven‘s
development as a composer. The 28-year-old Beethoven dedicated trios to Count
Johan Brown-Camus and in the published dedication he described them as the „best
of my work“ suggesting that he thought more highly of them than, for example, of his
three recent piano sonatas, op. 10.
Certainly, the best movements in the three op.9 trios can stand comparison with the
best in the six op.18 quartets. When composing op. 9 Beethoven had in mind
Schuppanzigh and his brilliant young colleagues. Melodic material, accompanying
texture and virtuoso passages are shared equally between all three instruments
creating what is, in effect, concertante chambre music.
The most vigorous of the three trios is perhaps the G major, with the fast
movements' thematic richness and almost symphonic elaborations especially in the
first Allegro. The Adagio in E major resembles in its beauty and melancholic
atmosphere other slow movements written by Beethoven at that time. The trio ends
with a brilliant and virtuoso Presto.
Trio in D major is the most traditional piece in the opus. It lacks the G major's
symphonic effects but conveys a finely subtle chamber music with warm and intimate
atmosphere. However the slow movement in D minor is perhaps the saddest piece in
the opus.
The last trio, in C minor, brings the most energy and novelty with highly passionate
tone. C minor is one of Beethoven's most important keys. Three of his piano sonatas
and the fifth symphony were written in C minor, for instance. This trio invokes those
later works' power and peculiar character so typical of Beethoven. Dynamic effects,
sharp contrasts in rhythm, harmonic confrontations among other means of music
provide momentum and the tone of anxiety. By contrast, the Adagio brings peace
and resignation in C major, with a more lively episode in E flat major in the middle of
the movement. Both the Scherzo and the Finale continue the passionate and
energetic storm of the first movement.
Vznik PRO ARTE TRIA před několika lety byl přirozeným výsledkem setkání a spolupráce tři hudebníků, kteří již měli velké zkušenosti jako sólisté a komorní hráči, kteří si uvědomili, jaké tvůrčí možnosti nabízí repertoár pro tři nástroje (housle, viola a violoncello) a které spojovalo společné hudební cítění a představivost. Jejich repertoár nabízí pestrý program koncertů zahrnující hudbu od baroka po současnost, a to jak výlučně triový, tak ve spolupráci s jinými nástroji (hoboj, klavír, klarinet).
Tři smyčcová tria, op. 9, představují milník ve vývoji skladatelovy tvorby. Osmadvacetiletý Beethoven je r. 1798 věnoval hraběti Johannu Georgu von Browne-Camus. Přípisem k dedikaci v prvním vydání označil tria jako “to nejlepší z mého díla” a vyzdvihl je tak např. nad současnou trojici klavírních sonát, op. 10, o nichž, zdá se, smýšlel ve světle předchozích trií méně příznivě.
Silné věty devátého opusu bezpochyby snesou srovnání s tím nejlepším z šestice kvartetů op. 18. Materiál melodií, předivo doprovodů i virtuózní pasáže jsou rovnoměrně rozděleny mezi tři nástroje. Díky úzkému pracovnímu přátelství Beethovena s vynikajícím houslistou Ignazem Schuppanzighem a mladými, nadanými členy jeho souboru mohl z opusu 9 vzejít pozoruhodný příklad koncertantní komorní hudby.
