 Deputy Commissioner Kargil Baseer-ul-Haq Choudhary today convened a meeting of the officers of Education Department Kargil to review the overall functioning of the department in the district.

Chief Planning Officer Tashi Tundup, Chief Education Officer Nazir Ahmed Wani, Zonal Education Officers and other concerned officers attended the meeting.

The DC inquired in detail about the number of schools, enrolment of children, status of sanctioned and in position teaching staff, facilities of electricity and water in these schools,  physical and financial status of works under Capex and Central Sponsored Schemes (CSS) besides other related issues.

Details of schools with enrolment less than 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 50 above and the status of deployment of teaching staff in these schools also came up for discussion. 

The DC emphasized upon the officers to make strenuous measures to improve quality of teaching in schools so that the quality of learning also gets better. He also called for revamping the system by making effective corrections at all levels so that the mandate of Right to Education is fulfilled in its true essence.

Expressing concern over enrolment of less than 10 in 170 schools of the district, the DC stressed on the officers to take concrete and coordinated measures to overcome this issue. He also directed the ZEOs to personally monitor the status of teaching and learning in their respective zones and spare at least 1 day per week in schools to have on spot appraisal of the education system on ground.

The DC emphasized the need of involving all stakeholders including parents and teachers in streamlining of this vital sector on which the onus of building a strong and developed nation lies. He stressed upon the importance of regular and effective monitoring of functioning of the schools especially in rural and hilly areas for better outcome.

While underlining the need for taking appropriate measures to rationalize teacher-student ratio in Government schools, examining the factors for low enrolment of children and to assess the other educational and infrastructural requirements, the DC desired that ZEOs and ZEPOs will convene periodical consultations with all concerned stakeholders and submit reports to him on daily basis.

The DC also stressed for giving focus on moral and value education to the children apart from the regular curriculum based studies adding that schools should also be equipped with all basic minimum facilities. He said that along with academic excellence, students must also be prepared to face the impending challenges of today’s era of cut throat competition. In this regard, he emphasized the role of teachers as of utmost importance.

 The DC said that there is need of collective efforts and a well knit strategy to further add to the standards of curricular and extracurricular activities especially in rural areas.

While underlining the importance of health and hygiene for children the DC directed the officers to take particular care in this regard. He instructed them to hold sustained awareness programmes and sanitation drives to aware children about proper hygiene for healthy living besides ensuring the provision of separate toilets for girl students.

As regards to unavailability of boarding facilities in a few schools, the DC directed officers to make alternate arrangements for children by way of rented accommodation or temporary structures. He also directed officers to submit a detailed report in this regard to him adding officers should identify land for construction of school buildings in such areas and reflect the same in next year’s plan.
