All warm bodies emit electromagnetic radiation as a result of the thermal motion of the charged particles from which they are made. An object which absorbs all radiation incident on it is known as an "ideal blackbody". To explore radiation from objects at certain temperatures, commonly known as "blackbody radiation".

In 1879 Josef Stefan found an empirical relationship between the power per unit area radiated by a blackbody and the temperature, which Ludwig Boltzmann derived theoretically a few years later. This relationship is the Stefan-Boltzmann law.
