Should I learn VBA or SQL?

SQL is a database language. VBA is a scripting language.

SQL is huge and hard to learn. That's why SQL server admins are paid so much, and why I do not want to try to learn it if VBA is a better use of my time.

VBA is something you can learn script by script, like learning ipconfig or a VI command at a time. As you learn VBA, you'll learn some of the advanced SQL.

I thought it was an either -- or situation.

You can write a query in VBA and SQL, sometimes. However, SQL is better if you need to access a database that is not MS Access.

What about Microsoft and Access?

The foundation level of VBA can be considered advanced Excel. Microsoft Access lets you design queries; this is SQL in an easy to access form.

Microsoft Access is not easy.

You can do a lot of queries via MS Access without having to learn SQL.

So I should learn MS Access and VBA without bothering with SQL. I just want to run custom reports and minimize the time spent generating them.

If you are trying to automate the reports you are running, use VBA. If you need to pull custom reports, use SQL.

What's the difference between them?

VBA is interpretive code, whereas SQL code is compiled.

That's still not an answer to my original question.

You cannot really use SQL in depth without understanding how dynamic queries work and how VBA runs. And you need to learn both SQL and VBA to be able to pull the right set of data and automate the data pulls.

So your answer is to learn both. But start with VBA because you can start using it faster a piece at a time.
