STORYLINE:
Roads were flooded in the Portuguese town of Alcacer do Sal on Friday after Storm Leonardo slammed the Iberian Peninsula.

The town, which is located about 90 kilometres (56 miles) away from Lisbon, was also battling rising waters from the river Sado.

Portugal's Civil Protection had issued an alert on Thursday for regions near the Tagus River due to rising water levels.

On Wednesday night, a man died in southern Portugal after his car was engulfed by floodwaters, local media said.

Storm Leonardo forced the evacuation of thousands of residents from their homes and businesses.
