Walking in the footsteps of my Grandfathers 2008, Position of the Australian 14th Machine Gun Company, 5th Division. Messines Ridge, Belgium. From the 12th of November 1917 the Company of 16 Guns stayed in this area for the next 2 weeks. Another cold winter and xmas was coming soon. The Battle of Messines Ridge took place 5 months earlier on the 7th June 1917. The English began the attack with 19 underground mines detonated. The Germans withdrew and had to fall back to a second line of defence called the Oosttaverne Line. They lost that support line as well on the 12th June 1917. Even though they lost the observation advantage by loosing the ridge they now had a solid position of defence. From the northern village of Hollebeke to the southern towns of Comines and Warneton a Railway Line encircled the ridge. It was impossible for the allies to advance further.
