In an era dominated by visual platforms such as Instagram, TripAdvisor, and Yelp, the significance of photographs for local businesses is undeniable. Long before these platforms gave consumers the power to visually share their experiences, visual representation was a key factor for customers. Now, with the widespread use of Google My Business (GMB), presenting appealing photos has become more crucial than ever for businesses to attract consumers.

Still skeptical? The following compelling data, gathered from an extensive analysis of 580,853 images across 15,191 GMB listings, will demonstrate the impact of GMB photos on both search results and user behavior.

Exploring the Role of Google My Business Photos in Local Search Performance
This investigation is part of BrightLocal's (my company) latest Google My Business Insights Study. We examined the GMB Insights of 45,000 businesses across 36 industries in four countries. The goal was to track changes over time and identify any patterns between the number of images on a GMB profile and key performance metrics like website clicks, phone calls, and search views.

The study focused on businesses with at least one uploaded image, contributed either by the business or consumers. Our analysis presents a correlation between image quantity and various GMB performance indicators.

While these correlations are strong, it's important to note that they don't necessarily imply causation. Nevertheless, the data is quite compelling.

More Photos on GMB Profiles Lead to Increased Engagement
I'm choosing to begin with the final step of the consumer discovery journey. This is because interactions such as clicks, phone calls, and requests for directions on GMB profiles are most strongly linked to the visibility of images.

Unlike other GMB metrics like search/views on maps and discovery/direct searches, images on GMB can directly influence customer actions. They are often displayed alongside call-to-action buttons, enhancing their potential impact on consumer decisions.
