Got a gift card with just a few dollars left? There's no need for it to go to waste. In this video, Shelley Hunter, your consumer guide to gift cards, shares how she uses the small balance left on a gift card.

Here are a few things to know:

1. In some states, cashiers are required to give the remaining balance back in cash, but that's only 13 states. Here's a list of the states that have state gift card laws about small balances. (https://www.giftcards.com/gcgf/return...)

2. Put the small balance gift cards in your wallet and tell the cashier you need help using the remaining balance. Most are trained to run several transactions if needed. It's called a split-tender transaction.

3. Plan to use the full amount. Before you spend the gift card, figure out to use it entirely. That might mean spending more than the value of the gift card or buying a small item just to exceed the limit.

4. Give the small balance to the next person in line. What a gift! Just do it. You'll feel great.

5. Don't walk away from the store with just a couple of bucks. It will be so much harder to go back with a few dollars to spend. Use it before you lose it. :)
