One very cool and helpful trick I found myself doing is that every time I play or practice, I use 12 pair different size, weight and length drum sticks. Some are the same sticks with added weight I apply to them. I play a while with one pair of sticks and then change to the next weighted pair, and so forth and so on. I cycle through all the various drum sticks each session I play. It keeps things interesting too.

I do this every time I play or practice and find that this approach conditions my hands to learn balancing different weights, thus provides a different "feel" which then offers ideas of various creative drumming that I would not otherwise encounter.

I add extra weight to sticks by using hot glue, rolling tape around them etc. For grip on the sticks I’ve used Zildjian lamb skin gloves, stick grip, I’ve dipped my own sticks and latex gloves which I've been questioned on many times. But the best grip for sticks I found so far is something called sex wax and it’s awesome...get a grip ~ lol...true story.
