At the Hakkoda Mountains, beautiful red and yellow autumn foliage of Japanese maple and rowan can be seen during fall. the Hakkoda Ropeway takes you through a sea of vivid crimson and gold treetops.
On a clear sunny day, one can see as far as the Tsugaru plains, Mutsu Bay.
The view from the ropeway is superb.
From the summit you can see the whole mountain range as it is dyed in warm autumn colours.
The season for autumn leaves is from late September to mid-October.

青森県のほぼ中央に位置する八甲田山は、青森市の南側にそびえる大岳（標高1,585m）を主峰とする18の山々からなる標高1000メートル以上の複数の山々の総称。雄大な眺望が楽しめる八甲田ロープウェーは、紅葉の時期には八甲田山観光の目玉となっており、ブナ、ナナカマド、カエデ、ダケカンバなどを空から望む風景は圧巻。色付き始めるのが山頂付近は9月下旬、山腹付近は10月上旬、山麓付近は10月中旬からで訪れる時期によって異なった紅葉風景が楽しめる。また湿原や沼も点在し、紅葉と共に堪能することができ、特に紅葉ドライブが満喫できる。
