Ian Frank Tortorici was born May 10th, 1991 in Oceanside, California and raised in Camp Pendleton, Mission Viejo and Lake Forest, California. Ian graduated from Laguna Hills High School where he excelled in Martial Arts and wrestling, breaking the school's all time pinning record and becoming a 2 x CIF runner up while maintaining a 3.5 GPA.
Ian went to Marine Corps Boot camp the Monday after graduating High School, where he trained and specialized in data and radio communication systems. Ian was mobilized for 10 months in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and exited the Marine Corps as Corporal.
After graduating from Saddleback College with Honors, Ian legally added the surname of his paternal great-grandfather, Tortorici, to his name. Ian graduated from Seattle Pacific University with plans of becoming a schoolteacher. However, his experiences in teaching changed his mind and he took a job with Microsoft after graduation.
Not content with an office environment, Ian left Microsoft after 6 months and became a U.S. Park Ranger, preforming various Law Enforcement duties, backcountry patrols, search and rescue, and rural EMT services. He was stationed at Harpers Ferry West Virginia, Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, and Hyde Park in New York.
After a little over 3 years as a Ranger, Ian was hired by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, graduating as the Outstanding Distinguished Graduate for the training academy. Ian was stationed in Philadelphia where he pursued fugitives, escorted deportees, managed a caseload of offenders, and returned children taken from their parents. Ian purchased a 120-year-old house and took a liking to working with his hands while learning how to renovate his home.
Ian frequently took long backpacking trips in Europe. After hiking across Sicily, Spain, Germany and Austria, Ian developed a deep interest in Eastern Europe. He backpacked and explored the Czech Republic, Serbia, Poland and ultimately Ukraine. While in Ukraine, he was introduced to Nadia by a mutual friend from Rocky Mountain National Park. Ian returned to Ukraine two more times to visit Nadia during peacetime.
On March 3rd, one week after the Russian invasion, Ian arrived in Ukraine and was attached to a Ukrainian National Guard unit as Kyiv was under attack. Shortly after he enlisted in the International Legion, a part of the Ukrainian Army for English speaking foreign soldiers.
Ian fought for almost 16 months, eventually becoming part of a Reconnaissance and Direct Action Team serving in some of the harshest conditions and battles in Kviv, Irpin, Mykolaiv, Lushansk, Severodonetsk, Bahkmut, Zaporizhia, Hulyaipole and Donetsk. Ian quickly gained a reputation as a skilled and fearless Machine gunner and eventually rose to the positions of Team Leader and Assistant Team Leader. Ian's experience led him to become a great tactician and strong leader who insisting on running point whenever possible. Ian was described as having a fun and calming presence when on leave yet obsessive and aggressive while on the front. With a casualty or wounded rate of 80% within his team , Ian incurred only one injury during the duration of his service. He experienced a severe concussion requiring a 10 day stay in the hospital. Ian was credited with saving many lives within his team while aggressively pursuing the enemy.
In June 2023, Ian’s Team had just completed a very successful assault in the Donetsk region and was granted leave in Kramatorsk. Three days after coming off the front, Ian was eating in a local restaurant with a few of his teammates when a Russian collaborator reportedly sent notice to his handlers who subsequently launched a hypersonic missile destroying the restaurant. Ian was killed in addition to several civilians including children.
Ian led a very simple existence, never interested in material things but lived for travel, food and comedy. He shunned notoriety and downplayed every achievement. He thrived in the harshest conditions and had unbreakable happy spirit while serving in Ukraine. He was kind and generous to a fault and his ferocity on the battlefield was fueled by pure love.
Ian is survived by his parents, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews, and his girlfriend Nadia who was preparing a traditional Wedding Towel for their planned October engagement.
