Honda HP-X: The 1980s Concept That Inspired the NSX
The Honda HP-X is one of the most recognizable concept cars ever made, thanks to Pininfarina, the company behind some of the most beautiful cars ever designed. Honda asked Pininfarina to create a car that would showcase the Japanese company's capabilities during the late eighties, a time when Honda was still more known for its fast bikes and slow cars.

This was a significant move, as Pinyinfarina paused their Ferrari designs for a few months to develop the HP-X, short for Honda Pinyinfarina Experimental. The HP-X featured a mid-mounted V6, essentially a Honda Formula 2 V8 with two cylinders removed.

The most striking feature of the HP-X was its fighter jet-style canopy, a single-piece plexiglass bubble that slid forward for entry and exit, reminiscent of the cockpit used by Goose and Maverick of the Hollywood's famous Top Gun movies.

Despite its compact dimensions, the HP-X boasts impressive aerodynamics, with a drag coefficient of only 0.25. Measuring 426.5 cm in length, 177 cm in width, and 112.5 cm in height, with a wheelbase of 225 cm, the HP-X is slightly larger than the Mazda MX-5 Miata.

The Honda HP-X remains a fascinating piece of automotive history, showcasing the visionary collaboration between Honda and Pinyinfarina.

Despite not achieving widespread recognition, the HP-X played a crucial role in shaping the future of automotive design and innovation. Its legacy lives on through the NSX and continues to inspire car enthusiasts and designers alike.
