After the energy spent building a new state and developing its capacities, in theatre and otherwise, Ireland fell into somewhat of a decline. Emigration rose, and it seemed that all good things came from elsewhere. What of the Irish theatre at this point? Who was doing what, where was it happening, and how was it connected to the life of the state?

Dream of Fair to Middling Women was Samuel Beckett’s first novel, ultimately rejected and not published until after his death. It is somewhat autobiographical, and deal with the denial of realism and the idea of anti-feminism.
