Total Construction Supplies Ltd have just undertaken a prestigious prefabrication project for Van Elle Ltd. The first of its kind to supply and fit the RCL “Super-Latch” splicing system to prefabricated pile cages.

Van Elle had 12 piles to install for the main contractor, BAM Nuttall, who were working on behalf of Network Rail at Wantage Bridge, Oxfordshire.

Van Elle’s design brief was to supply a two part cage – 750OD x 16B40 with an overall length of 19.5m.

We originally met with Andy Waghorn, Divisional Director & Chris Huxley, Construction Manager of Van Elle, in August 2015 and both had the vision and foresight to see the potential benefits of using the “Super-Latch” system. They had suggested that this project would be ideal to trial the system.

Once we had the approved pile design, the first step was to build a test cage at our Wolverhampton works, which Chris Huxley and Gary Steele, Site Manager came to inspect to ensure that the cage and latch would meet their requirements. Once this had been established we were able to proceed with the manufacture of all 12 piles.

The first pile went into the ground on Monday 9th November 2015, with complete ease. The total time taken from cage lift to getting the splice connected was less than 10 minutes. The benefits of the Super-Latch system are apparent from watching the video link – no site personnel had to put their hands inside the cage, which addresses a highly hazardous safety issue. Also, the speed and ease at which the cages were spliced together was astounding – the cages simply lock together, no time is wasted by having to line up bands and then insert and tighten up bolts. One of the key features of “Super-Latch” is that the cages are fully complete when they leave the works.

This is the most innovative method of cage splicing on the market. Total Construction Supplies have worked very closely with Steve Render, Reinforcement Consultants Ltd, the inventor of “Super-Latch”, to get this patented product onto a piling project such as this and the benefits speak clearly for themselves.
