Dogs have been ubiquitous around humans for thousands of years but the exact nature of the human dog relationship remains mysterious, to the detriment of both parties. I shall review recent work from my lab under three headings. First I consider (and reject) claims that dogs have a unique innate sensitivity to human actions and intentions. Second, I consider the behavior of dogs in shelters with a focus on behaviors that influence human adoption decisions. Third, I sketch novel behavioral approaches to problem behavior in pets.
