Vedic astrology, also known as Jyotish, is an ancient system of astrology that originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. The word Jyotish means "light" or "science of light," and it is based on the belief that celestial objects, such as planets and stars, have a direct influence on human affairs and the natural world.

In Vedic astrology, the birth chart, or horoscope, is used to determine a person's personality traits, strengths, weaknesses, and life path. The birth chart is based on the position of the planets at the time of a person's birth, and it is divided into twelve houses, each representing different areas of life.

Vedic astrology is also used to determine auspicious times for important events, such as weddings and business deals, and to offer guidance on issues related to health, career, relationships, and spirituality.

Vedic astrology differs from Western astrology in several ways, including the use of sidereal zodiac instead of tropical zodiac, the consideration of the lunar nodes, and the use of various planetary periods known as dasas and sub-dasas.
