গাইবান্ধা নামকরনের সঙ্গে দুটি কিংবদন্তি জড়িয়ে আছে। একটি তে বলা হয়েছে মহাভারতের বর্ণনা অনুযায়ী দুষ্টু ডাকাত আক্রমণ থেকে বিরাট রাজার গাভী রক্ষায় নদী তীরবর্তী এলাকায় ঘেষে জমিতে একটি সংগ্রহশালা স্থাপন করা হয়। এই গাভীর খাদ্য পানি সংস্থান নিশ্চিত করা হয় এবং এখানে গাভীগুলো কে বেঁধে রাখা হতো। কিংবদন্তী অনুসারে গাভী বেঁধে রাখার স্থান কে কেন্দ্র করে নামটি হয় গাভী বাধা পরবর্তীকালে কথ্য ভাষা অনুসারে শব্দটি হয়ে যায় গাইবান্ধা। কারণ গাই শব্দের অর্থ গাভী আর বান্দা শব্দের অর্থ বাধা স্থানীয় ভাষায় প্রচলিত গাইবানদা শব্দের সমন্বয়ে শব্দটি যায় গাইবান্ধা নামকরণ হয়।

অপর কিংবদন্তি গোয়াল ঘর বা গোশালা কে কেন্দ্র করে নামকরণ করা হয়েছে।গাইবান্ধা নামকরনের আরেকটি তথ্য সূত্র হল উত্তরাঞ্চলের বেশ কিছু স্থানের নাম জীবন নামের শেষে বান্দা শব্দটির যুক্ত হয়ে প্রচলিত হয়েছে। সে দিক থেকে কিছু কিছু স্থানের নাম হয়েছে হাতীবান্ধা চ্যাংড়াবান্ধা ইত্যাদি কেউ কেউ মনে করেন স্থানের নাম হিসেবে গাইবান্ধাসহ ঠিক অনুরূপ নামের শেষে বান্দা শব্দ যুক্ত হয়ে উদ্ভব হয়েছে। তবে ধারণা করা হয় গাইবান্ধা নামটি অপেক্ষাকৃত পরবর্তীকালে সৃষ্টি ইতিহাসের সূত্র অনুযায়ী গাইবান্ধা পূর্বে ভবানীগঞ্জ মহাকুমার অন্তর্গত পাতিলাদহ পরগনার একটি এলাকা ছিল। আর বর্তমান গাইবান্ধা শহর এলাকা তদানীন্তন পাতিলাদহ পরগনার পশ্চিমাংশ যা বাহার বন্দ পরগণা নামে অভিহিত-সেখানে অবস্থিত।

গাইবান্ধা জেলার ইতিহাস সূত্রে প্রাপ্ত থেকে জানা যায়, ভবানীগঞ্জ ফুলসড় অঞ্চলের একটি গ্রামের নাম ছিল।পরবর্তীকালে এই গ্রামের নামে থানা পরগনা ও মহকুমা প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়।

প্রতিটি প্রশাসনিক এলাকার সীমানা নির্ধারিত থাকে। গাইবান্ধা জেলার সীমানা রয়েছে এর উত্তরে তিস্তা নদী, উত্তর পশ্চিমে রংপুর জেলার পীরগাছা এবং পশ্চিমে রংপুর জেলার মিঠাপুকুর পীরগাছা উপজেলা রয়েছে। পশ্চিম সীমানায় আরো রয়েছে দিনাজপুর জেলার ঘোড়াঘাট উপজেলা আবার পশ্চিম-দক্ষিণ জয়পুরহাট জেলার কালাই উপজেলা এবং দক্ষিনে বগুড়া জেলার শিবগঞ্জ ও সোনাতলা উপজেলা। এর পূর্ব দিকে বহমান ব্রহ্মপুত্র নদ

The boundaries of each administrative area are defined. Gaibandha district is bounded on the north by Teesta river, on the northwest by Pirgachha upazila of Rangpur district and on the west by Mithapukur Pirgachha upazila of Rangpur district. The western boundary also includes Ghoraghat upazila of Dinajpur district, Kalai upazila of west-south Joypurhat district and Shibganj and Sonatala upazilas of Bogra district in the south. The Brahmaputra river flows towards its east.
