In this video, I'll explain 3 easy techniques that will give your really sharp photos without tripod.

These 3 tips are:

1. Shutter speed to focal length
2. Enhanced Stability
3. Timer
4. (BONUS) Breathing

SHUTTER SPEED TO FOCAL LENGTH
-----------------------------------

The first rule you must follow to take sharp photos without a tripod is simple.

Always ensure your SHUTTER SPEED is equal to, or higher than, your FOCAL LENGTH.

The reason is that as your focal length (zoom) increases, slight movements with be magnified. And those movements will impact sharpness just a little bit. By increasing the shutter speed you eliminate that issue.

For example, if you are using a 50mm prime lens, your shutter speed must be at or over 1/50 shutter speed. For a 100mm focal length use 1/100 or higher shutter speed.

ENHANCED STABILITY

We know you will be taking photos with your hands in this case, and of course you use 2 hands already. But there are a few other things you can do for sharp photos (via reducing motion).

a) bring your elbows into you body to reduce camera shake. This will give you more points of contact
b) use your camera strap around your neck or arm to create tension (thus creating more stability)
c) lean against a wall to steady your body
d) put your camera on a flat surface if one is available (the “free” tripod”)

Timer
-----------------------------------

Pressing the shutter release can actually cause some camera motion. While minimal, it does impact the sharpness of your photo (if only a bit).

I recommend you use the 2 second timer on your DSLR. When you do, press the shutter release and then be as still as you can for 2 seconds.

This will reduce more movement for a more stable position and a sharper photo.

Breathing
-----------------------------------

Breathing can make a difference to photography. The more rapid your breath, the more your camera moves.

Do two things.

First, focus on slowing down your breath. Slowly breath in and out, over several seconds.

Second, when you are done your exhale or inhale, hold your breath and take your shot at that time. This will reduce the movement slightly.

The key uses of these photography tips are for creating ultra sharp, crisp, clear photos. All styles of photography deserve razor sharp image quality, but these are my most used styles.
