Egypt's Anwar el-Sadat ruled as a pragmatic leader during a pivotal period in the quest for peace in the Middle East. His 1979 peace treaty, signed with Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, ended decades of hostility between their nations and led to Israel's withdrawal from Sinai.

Sadat served as Egypt's president between 1970 to 1981 - until he was assassinated by Islamist fundamentalists who opposed the peace treaty with Israel.

Before then, he sat down for an interview with 60 Minutes' Ian Leslie, where the Nobel Peace Prize recipient remained confident in the newly-forged relationship with Israel despite the rift it caused with other Arab nations.
