This talk explores the story of one of the most influential economic thinkers in post-revolution Iran, whose lifelong pursuit of justice shaped the way many viewed fairness and equality in the economy. With a deep interest in social equity and an early leaning toward left-oriented ideals, his journey reveals how reading and reflection—especially on the works of Adam Smith—led to a realization: justice and self-interest are not contradictions, but two forces that can coexist to create a healthy economy.

The talk reflects on how, after the revolution, attempts to enforce fairness sometimes led to unbalanced regulations and punitive measures that distorted the natural function of markets. It argues that many of today’s economic issues stem from a lack of trust in the market’s own order and capacity for balance.

Through two real-world examples—from the electricity sector and the housing market—the talk demonstrates how misunderstanding the principles of market behavior continues to shape national challenges. Ultimately, it calls for a rethinking of justice in economics: not as control over the market, but as faith in its ability to organize itself when guided by knowledge, integrity, and trust. Hossein Abdeh Tabrizi is an Iranian economist, financial strategist, and policy advisor with extensive experience in capital markets, corporate finance, and housing economics. As a professor and public intellectual, he has contributed to shaping Iran’s financial system and promoting transparency and efficiency in economic policy. His research and lectures focus on sustainable finance, market regulation, and macroeconomic reform.
