I’ve been an exotic pet veterinarian for 6 years now, and I still enjoy it just as much.
👉 Let me show you a bit of what my daily work looks like.
What exactly are exotic pets? The term refers to a wide range of species: small mammals (rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, gerbils, ferrets), birds (chickens, geese, ducks, pigeons, budgies, parrots, canaries), reptiles (lizards, turtles, snakes), and also fish and amphibians (axolotls, frogs). 🐢🦜🐓🐠🐍🐇🐁🦎🦆
What fascinates me most is having to adapt to so many different species (even if, let’s be honest, we mostly see rabbits 😂), sometimes extremely small ones weighing just a few grams, and for which scientific knowledge can be quite limited.
Of course, there are downsides, just like in any profession. For me, the hardest part is finding a balance between personal life and work. Veterinary medicine is a demanding field, a passion-driven career as many say, and it can quickly lead to physical and mental exhaustion when you don’t count the hours spent in consultations, on call, or handling emergencies. You really need to know how to protect yourself and think about your own wellbeing, because health is what matters most! 🦾
🤩 As for me, 2025 has been an incredible year. Professionally, I’ve met amazing people who helped me complete my specialization program (the ECZM residency).
I hope 2026 treats me just as well and brings success for my exam.
Wishing you a wonderful new year, with good health for you, your loved ones, and your animals. 🫶
