Jesus Christ died in Japan. This odd pseudo-factoid has circulated on the Internet for so long as a "weird fact" that is is almost a punchline. There does exist a grave to Jesus of Nazareth in Shingo village (formerly Herai), Aomori Prefecture, Japan. The legend states the village was actually orginally known as Heburai ("Hebrew") and a mysterious man named "Daitenku Taro Jurai" came ashore one day to bury a bone, or lock of hair, from his brother. Other versions of the legend say this man's name was "Mr. Christmas". This mysterious individual then faded away into obscurity, or later history simply created his mystery from this obscurity. This truncated version of the "Shingo folklore" popular on the Internet though removes the deeper strangeness for easy consumption. The legend in its modern version did not exist until the 1930s, and it was not celebrated as an odd sort of tourism in Shingo until the 1960s really. The Jesus in Japan myth was largely the eccentric handiwork of one man who was not even Christian: Kiyomaro Takeuchi (or Takenouchi).

Kiyomaro Takeuchi was a man who wanted to create his own religion, a new religion, a universal religion based around what he saw as the true history of Japan. Takeuchi claimed to be in the possession of various ancients documents and artifacts, handed down to him by his family, that proved the Japanese emperor had once, long ago, ruled the entire world. All religions and cultures were rooted in Japan according to Takeuchi. Global peace could only be restored once the "conspiracy" occluding this ancient, original truth was removed and the world restored to its original state. This creed of course garnered Takeuchi an appropriate cavalcade of confidants and followers: fringe historians, radical expansionists, and polyglot occultists. While politics changed, Kiyomaro Takeuchi survived WWI and WWI. Even to this day, Takeuchi's fringe creed survives and its relationship to the legend of Jesus Christ in Japan is as endlessly strange as its own historical tenants.

This of course all resulted in a really neat gift shop in Shingo, Aomori Prefecture named "Christop" that sells Jesus in Japan related souvenirs and memorabilia. Swell!
