On 23 February 1966, US Senator Robert 'Bobby' Kennedy spoke to ITN's Peter Woods about the controversy surrounding his recent calls for the National Liberation Front, the political wing of the Viet Cong, to be included in peace negotiations aimed at ending the war in Vietnam. Kennedy explained why he believed negotiations must involve all major parties to achieve a lasting settlement. He discussed his proposal to allow the Viet Cong a seat at the negotiating table, outlining his view that the war would ultimately be ended either by compromise and dialogue or by "crushing" the Viet Cong militarily – an outcome which, Kennedy assessed, would necessarily include the destruction of "most of Vietnam". The interview sheds light on the political risks Kennedy faced for challenging the prevailing US policy, as well as the criticism he received from within the Johnson administration and wider American society for advocating what many considered a controversial stance.
