The Walls of Lucca: Historical re-enactment in Lucca

In medieval times, Lucca had strong fortifications and a very well organized army divided in several units. One of these army unit was composed of soldiers equipped with medieval heavy crossbow. Since 1443 these soldiers used to make a competition game to show to the population their skills and high military quality using this strong and lethal weapon.

Nowadays Lucca still organizes those kinds of competitions thanks to the association “Compagnia Balestrieri Lucca (Company of Crossbowmen Lucca)”. This group of man and women with passion maintains alive this old tradition. The groups who form the association are made of: Crossbow archers and Flag wavers, musicians, armoured and duellists and the Renaissance dance.

Turislucca is able to organize a tour for groups in which we show Lucca Walls and how these old weapons where used in the past.
