‘Temptation Island" at 25: Mark L Walberg revisits the reality dating show"s ‘creepy-cheesy" debut, Twenty-five years ago, Fox unleashed a titillating new reality show called Temptation Island on an unsuspecting public - and dating on TV was never the same again. Billed as "the most daring reality TV show ever," the series dispatched four committed couples to a tropical resort in Belize where they were instantly separated and surrounded by telegenic "tempters" of the opposite sex whose only goal was to seduce them away from their partners. Ahead of the show"s Jan. 10, 2001 debut, Fox execs called Temptation Island "a show that is exploring the dynamics of serious relationships." Critics, on the other hand, called it a "lurid" and "creepy-cheesy" copycat of CBS" newly minted megahit Survivor. Watchdog groups piled on, barking that Temptation Island was "trash" made for "low-lifes."
