STEM persists in having one of the largest gender gaps. Though women make up about half of the workforce, they occupy just 30% of STEM jobs, and within the most lucrative fields of engineering and computer science, only 21% and 19%, respectively. In her talk, Valentina Diaz-Romero, discusses why is it that this gap is so apparent, what we can do to address it, and finally, why it is important that we do so. Valentina Diaz-Romero began cultivating her STEM interests in high school. Witnessing the lack of girls involved in the engineering and robotics spheres in her school, she learned about the importance of inclusion and support of women in the STEM field. She developed a space for girls to explore these interests in the hopes that more girls would learn about the opportunities afforded to them. Valentina is an upcoming first-year at Georgia Tech and a recipient of the Stamps President's Scholarship. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
