Pangkor island is stunning. If you haven't visited, well... it's because you probably haven't heard about it because it's not on the usual tourist trail. Pulau Pangkor is a holiday destination for local Malaysians. From Kuala Lumpur International Airport, it takes a 5 hour bus ride and then a boat from the jetty to get to Pangkor. As a solo female traveler, I met new friend Dion who was also staying at Teluk Nipah Camp, and together, we traveled around Pulau Pangkor by motorcyle.
We visited the must see tourist destinations and attractions, including the Chinese Fu Lin Kong temple, the HIndu Sri Pathira Kaliamman temple, the Dutch Fort, and the stunning floating Muslim mosque, Masjid Terapong, Masjid Terapung Teluk Gedung).
Fu Ling Kong is a Chinese temple located centrally on the east coast. There, we encountered a wild monkey while wandering around the mini China Wall replica. I have not visited The Great Wall of China, so this was an interesting experience for me. This Buddhist temple had Hindu symbols, including a little statue of a Hindu god, and this clearly showed an interesting overlap here on Pangkor between Buddhist and Hindu religions.
A short 3 minute ride away was the Hindu Kaliamman temple. It was smaller that I expected, and the coastal views were gorgeous. We saw Hindu priests perform rituals, perhaps blessings, for local Indian Malaysian families that visited. The Sri Pathira Kaliamman temple was super colourful and very different from the Chinese temple.
On our way to the floating Mosque, we stopped at the Dutch Fort for a few moments. The Duch Fort is mostly comprised of reconstruction, but some of the old ruins remain from the 18th century. The Dutch history here and use of local mines appears to be interesting, and I wondered if the Dutch connection was part of the reason why I met two Dutch travelers while there, despite the island having very few foreign tourists.
We finally visited Masjid Terapung (Terapong), also known as the floating Mosque. The pier which led to the entrance, the robes we were asked to wear, and high ceilings and open arched doorways created an impressive experience for both Dion and me. The colours decorating the high walls, and Islamic decorative scriptures and motifs were stunning.
We ended our evening at Daddy's Cafe on Coral beach, enjoying a dhal and crab curry at sunset. Malaysia has some stunning beaches and Coral beach is the best beach on Pangkor island, hands down. Solo backpackers like myself love the Teluk Nipah neighbourhoud which is a 7 minute walk over to Coral beach. As a solo female backpacker, I highly recommend staying at Teluk Nipah and renting a motorbike to tour the tourist spots dotted around the island.
