Africa is a continent with a rich historical background, starting from the colonial era, post colonial and independence period. The wind of change is said to have blown across Africa after the second world war(WW II). At this time or period, only a handful of countries in Africa were independent, such as Ethiopia, Liberia, Egypt and South Africa.

After this war, African people wanted a change and desire to establish a society free from European control. The 5th pan African congress held in Manchester in 1945, is seen as a major landmark in the achievement of African Independence and was championed by a hand full of African independence leaders.

However it is quit unfortunate that in this 21st CENTURY, the memory and works of these heroes are gradually dying down in the minds of the present day African community. Paying homage and tributes to these heroes is something we owe them, as such we will be bringing to you some key figures of Africa’s whose memories and works ought not to be forgotten.

01. KWAME NKRUMAH
Pan African Leader; Born on September 1909, he was a Ghanaian nationalist leader who led Ghana to independence from Britain and was equally an important advocate for pan Africanism. He was co-organizer of the 5th pan African congress in Manchester in 1945.

Kwame Nkrumah is remembered for spear heading gold coast’s independence movement and its transformation into modern day Ghana. He inspired subsequent independence movements throughout Africa. He became Ghana’s first prime minister in 1952, and later president. He died In 1972 after accomplishing great works.

02. PATRICE LUMUMBA
Patrice Lumumba, the first legally elected prime minister of the democratic republic of Congo, he was assassinated barely less than seven years after independence.

Patrice Lumumba’s determination to achieve genuine independence and to have full control over Congo’s resources in order to use them improve the living conditions of his people was perceived as treat to western interest and as such to fight him, the US and Belgium used all the tools and resources at their disposal, including the united nations secretariat.
He was assassinated in 1961 by American and Belgian governments who used Congolese accomplices and a Belgian execution squad to carry the murder. Patrice Lumumba is a son of Africa who sacrificed his life for his people to have full control over their own country.

03. AHMED SEKOU TOURE
Ahmed Sekou Toure ( 1922 - 1984) was president of Guinea from its
Born into a rural Muslim home, TOURE received a limited primary and secondary education. Beginning his political career as post clerk, he became active as a trade unionist and later became involved in the Rassemblement Democratic African (RDA), a political organization in French west and equatorial Africa advocating for pan Africanism and decolonization.

During his rule, TOURE, strongly influenced by Marxism, pursued the AFRICAN REVOLUTION and turned Guinea into a military socialist one party state.
