In the early 1960s, Dr Hughes Day of Bethany Hospital, Kansas City, worked hard to reduce the number of deaths caused by coronary incident. He tried successive solutions, introducing a primitive form of coronary crash team and bringing the newly developed heart monitors into the unit. Deaths, however, remained stubbornly high until Dr Day realised that the processes and people surrounding the new technology had to change as well.

It was not until nurses began to be trained in the new cardiac heart massage techniques and to use read cardiograms and insert intravenous catheters that the deaths rates from cardiac incident began to fall substantially.

New technologies may be part of the solution to a problem, but they have to be adopted in the right human context in order to have their full effect.
