This lesson is part of a language training program for professionals provided by Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Centre for newcomers to Canada. It is funded by Immigration and Citizenship Canada. We post these lessons on YouTube so that students who missed class or who are simply not able to attend class can learn from them too. You can follow along and use the Ben Franklin writing process to learn on your own.

In this class, we developed a model response. We went over the best structure for this prompt type, brainstormed ideas, and talked about higher levels of topic development in order to increase our Task Achievement score for a 2 Perspectives and Opinion prompt:

While some people think it is what children watch on television that influences their behaviour, others say it is the amount of time that children spend watching television that influences their behaviour. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

We also talked about the best way to write introduction and conclusion paragraphs. Most of your marks are in the body paragraphs, in how you develop your ideas, so you need to write an introduction and conclusion that are as short as possible. We went over the formula for doing so.

You can follow along and use the process below to learn to write on your own.

THE WRITING PROCESS

1. Model by hand = rewrite model response. Read it aloud.
2. Create a reverse outline based on the model.
3. Write your own version based on the outline.
4. Compare and critique.
5. Put everything away. Write from memory and show it to the teacher. If you're in my class, I will provide feedback and give you an opportunity to revise your work. I'll check it again and then provide corrections and detailed explanations.
