For brown spots in any area of the body, here are over the counter treatments I recommend.

1. It's never too late to practice good sun protection.
Even a few months of daily sunscreen, hats and sun protective clothes will help fade brown spots.

2. Want extra sun protection? Consider adding a supplement with Polypodium Leucotomos, which can improve brown spot clearance when added to standard treatments.

3. Chose a hyperpigmentation cream with several active ingredients. Those to look for include Azelaic acid, alpha arbutin, tranexamic acid, kojic acid, niacinamide and vitamin C.

4. Active ingredients like retinol and glycolic acid can help, especially when used with hyperpigmentation treatments listed above.

5. DON'T jump hastily to laser treatment or chemical peels. These can seem like quick fixes but you need to see someone is has expertise in these procedures in order to avoid expensive recurrence, complications or worsening hyperpigmentation (which is more likely in darker skin individuals). Having a trained professional perform these procedures may also allow for melanomas to be caught instead of lasered

6. If your doctor prescribed you a triple combo cream with hydroquinone, topical steroid and tretinoin, DON'T use for longer than 3 month intervals. Long term use can lead to skin thinning from the topical steroid, and paradoxical hyperpigmentation from the hydroquinone.
