Voting Underway For Phase 1 of J&K Assembly Election

Voting is underway for the first phase of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) assembly polls. The polling is on in 24 out of 90 assembly seats in J&K, including 16 seats in Kashmir and eight in Jammu. Major contesting parties include BJP, Congress-NC alliance and PDP. The key candidates include PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter- Iltija Mufti, Congress general secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir, AIP chief Engineer Rashid who faces terror funding charges and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami. In phase 1, Over 2.3 million eligible voters will decide the fate of 219 candidates, including 90 independents. The Election Commission of India has set up 3,267 polling stations with 14,000 staff across the region. This is the first election in the erstwhile state in the last 10 years. The citizens are voting for the first time since the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to J&K.
