(20 Jun 2017) Russia says it is waiting for the US to explain its decision to shoot down a Syrian warplane.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Tuesday that Moscow had asked for a "detailed explanation" of Monday's downing of a Syrian Su-22 bomber.
The US said it had downed the Syrian jet a day earlier after it dropped bombs near the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces conducting operations against the Islamic State group, adding that was something it would not tolerate.
Russia responded by warning it would track aircraft from the US-led coalition as potential targets over Syria and suspended a hotline intended to avoid mid-air collisions.
Lavrov said that the hotline has been efficient in the past.
He also criticized the US and its allies for keeping economic sanctions on Russia over Ukraine, blaming the Ukrainian government for failing to implement the peace deal.
Lavrov spoke after meeting French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian in Moscow.
Le Drian said that France did not want to see "Russia's isolation from Europe nor its economic and financial weakening".
He said they wanted to work with Russia to solve problems that affect them both, most notable the "joint enemy", meaning extremists operating out of Syria.
