In Part 1 of Crime and Punishment, we are introduced to Rodion Raskolnikov, a poor and isolated former student living in St. Petersburg. He believes that some “extraordinary” people have the right to break moral laws for a greater purpose.
Driven by this dangerous idea, poverty, and inner conflict, Raskolnikov plans and commits the murder of an old pawnbroker, Alyona Ivanovna. Unexpectedly, her innocent sister Lizaveta arrives, and Raskolnikov kills her as well.
After the crime, he steals only a few items and hides them, showing that the act was not truly for money. Soon after, he falls into illness, fear, and paranoia. Even in Part 1, it becomes clear that the crime has already started destroying his mind.
