1963 marked a great change in Corvette styling, performance and handling.

Today on the Monster Hobbies Model Car Garage we will be looking at the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray 50th Anniversary Model Kit By AMT/ERTL. This is a model car unboxing video.

The Sting Ray was the first all new Corvette in 10 years and the changes went beyond styling innovations. In 1963, for the first time, the Corvette featured sophisticated four wheel independent suspension, a new perimeter type frame and offered power steering and brakes as options.

The AMT 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray model car was a brand new tool for 1963 following the success of the AMT 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray convertible model car. This Corvette was part of the Customizing series of cars that were popular at that time. From the construction methods used in this kit, it is basically a promotional model with a lot of parts included to make this kit a Stock, Custom or Race Car. Since it's initial release, an extra engine, the Chevrolet 427 Big Block, was added to the 327 Small Block.

To start with, there are two versions of the stock small block 327 cu. in. engine, the 300 - 340 horsepower four-barrel carb, and the 360 horsepower fuel injection engine. Both engines consists of 16 parts which share a few universal parts : 2-part engine and transmission pieces, front cover, fan belt / pulleys / generator, fan, cylinder heads, valve covers, and distributor. To build the 300 - 340 hp engine, there is a 4 bbl carb intake manifold, carb, air cleaner in three pieces. For the 360 hp engine, a 3-piece Corvette Fuel Injection unit mounts to the top. Finally, there is a choice for both engines of either a stock oil pan and exhaust manifolds or a custom chrome oil pan with race headers.

Moving on to the big block 427 cu. in. engine, there are three ways to build it : a stock three 2-bbl option, four dual Weber carb racing version and a 6-71 supercharger quarter-mile eliminator engine. All engines start off with the following universal parts : 2-part engine and transmission pieces, front cover, fan belt / pulleys / alternator, fan, cylinder heads, exhaust manifolds, starter, and oil pan. To build the stock three 2-bbl option engine, there is an intake manifold, tri-carbs, air cleaner, distributor shield and valve covers. To build the Weber carb option, there is an intake manifold, four dual-carbs, distributor and chrome ribbed valve covers. The final supercharged version includes a supercharger manifold, special timing gear cover, fuel injection pump, 3-piece chrome 6-71 GMC blower assembly, supercharger drive belt, two piece "Bug Catcher" injector scoop, distributor and chrome ribbed valve covers. Special Drag Race headers finish the motor.

The chassis is of the single pan arrangement, so all the suspension, rear exhaust pipes, differential and drive shaft are molded to this pan. There are some flat axle blocks and steel wire axles to mount the wheels/tires onto. A radiator wall and radiator glue on this pan and a hose connects to the radiator though.

For the wheels, you get a choice of stock Corvette knock-offs or American 5-spoke mags. These wheel mount to wheel rings and go through a set of Goodyear vinyl tires. there is also a deep wheel rim and a pair of Goodyear drag slicks for the dragster option.

The interior is also very basic. You get an interior tub, dashboard, steering wheel with column, seat belts and a chrome floor mounted gear shift lever. There is a surfer helmet and a safety helmet, depending on the interests of the driver.

The stock body has an opening hood, firewall and under-hood components, chrome Corvette front grille with bumpers, rear bumperettes, licence plate housing, windshield, rear view mirror, taillights and optional exhaust tips. If you want to build this as a custom or race car, there are many optional pieces. These include a choice of 2 different hoods, additional hood scoops, drag chute, custom grille, dual fuel tanks, custom tail lamps with transparent red insert, and collector plates for the dragster.

As you might expect from the AMT 1963 Chevrolet Corvette model car, there are a number of chrome trim pieces that are molded to the body, such as the windshield frame and the chrome around the sculpted wheel alcoves. I'd imagine that most of us will be using Bare Metal Foil to cover those parts to make it more accurate and dress it up.

If you like these rare vintage sports cars, then the AMT 1963 Chevrolet Corvette model car kit is perfect for you!
