Helen Beach, born in 1900 in the Western town Victor, Colorado. She began her career at the National Archives and Records Administration in 1936 as a cataloguer. This was the only job available to women at that time. During World War II, wartime shortages of materials gave Helen the idea to improvise a wooden wagon that would be built to access the specific dimensions of the stacks at the National Archives. This allowed records researchers to more efficiently work in the stacks - with their auxiliary materials close at hand. More records so crucial to American citizens - were able to be accessed easily. Her carts were always in demand. In 1963 - nearly 20 years after their initial implementation, the carts were the subject of internal memos from leadership demanding their return.The original Beach Wagons are still in use at the National Archives today as of 2025.
