Bulk super sacks are an excellent choice for dry material storage. Whether for construction materials such as sand or gravel or raw materials for food or pharmaceutical manufacturing, these rugged, durable, super sacks are super effective. Also effective is pallet flow rack for storing your bulk materials. Using a standard or donor pallet, you can safely store a high volume of sacks and use less space than floor stacking… which can be risky.

A recent test compares how well a customer-supplied sack sample flows on both wheeled and roller pallet flow. What we discovered may surprise you --take a look at the video test.

This Pallet Flow Rack Test is in the Bag! See How Wheeled & Roller System Designs Compared

Pallet Specs:
Wood - 42” x 42”
Load weight - 2450 lbs.
Note: Pallets must be in good condition to ensure reliable flow… see notes below for more flow tips!

Pallet flow system designs:
Wheeled Design
3-rails, 2.9” diameter on 2” centers
Lane width - 41” out to out
Pitch - 7/16
Drop-in speed controllers - set 50” apart

Roller Design
1.9” diameter split roller on 2” centers
Lane width - 42” out to out
Pitch - 7/16
Drop-in speed controllers - set 50” apart

As you can see, the two flow lane designs are very similar, which makes for an ideal comparison. Ultimately, both systems provide reliable flow and restart after sitting, allowing this customer to choose the configuration that best meets their needs. Before assuming budget should dictate your choice, first ask the following questions:

What is the likelihood of other pallet types in the system?
Could load weights change significantly?
Do you require wash-down compatibility?

Your answers will help lead to a long-lasting pallet flow rack solution for your particular circumstances.

Advice for Storing Bulk Super Sacks in Pallet Flow Rack

High-density systems like pallet flow rack are ideal for safely storing bulk bags. Here are a few tips to ensure success:

Test Your System Design: Let our Engineering Test Lab examine your pallets with your flow rack design is always best. With non-standard dimensions and shifting contents, you want to be sure that your pallet flow lane has adequate speed control and tracking to deliver a high level of productivity.

Leave Clearance Space: Sharp bolts and steel racking components are not friendly to woven fabric bulk sacks. You must leave space on either side for clearance to prevent snags and tears during loading and unloading. Also, ensure adequate lift-off space above each lane to accommodate variations in bag dimensions when filled with product.

Use Quality Pallets: As with all pallet flow systems… quality pallets prevent many potential headaches, such as broken debris interfering with the flow and stuck pallets causing delays. Check out this blog for everything you need to know about pallets and pallet flow rack.

Operator Training: Ensure forklift operators are well-trained to prevent costly mistakes such as ripped bags and spilled products. They should also carefully follow loading and unloading procedures to avoid damaging the bags and the products inside. Take a look at our instructional video for proper loading techniques.
