Lauterbrunnen has pretty much everything that makes Switzerland special, all in one place. Marvel at natural spectacles against an alpine backdrop. Stroll through picture-postcard village.
Lauterbrunnen can be found in a valley of dramatic beauty between Interlaken and the Jungfrau Massif. You’d be hard pressed to find anywhere that feels as much like the Swiss Alps as this.

One way to start your day could be with a stroll through the village, against the backdrop of the Staubbach Falls.

The village gets its name – Lauter Brunnen (loud springs) – from the 72 waterfalls that can be found there. Its landmark is the Staubbachfall: see how it cascades 300 metres over the vertical rock face.
The village is located in the Lauterbrunnen valley and consists of the towns of Lauterbrunnen, Wengen, Mürren, Gimmelwald, Stechelberg and Isenfluh. The population of Lauterbrunnen is lower than that of Wengen, but higher than that of the other four towns. The total area of the municipality of Lauterbrunnen is 164.5 square kilometers. The lowest point in the municipality is 728 m above sea level and the highest is 4158 m above sea level.

The Weisse Lütschine river flows through Lauterbrunnen, which overflows its banks on average once a year.

After 1300, the Barons of Turn, who were mainly wealthy in the Valais, settled their own people in the rear Lauterbrunnen valley. In contrast to the rest of the Bernese Oberland, Lauterbrunnen was settled from the Valais. The town appears in the sources in 1240 as claro fonte, and in 1304 as Luterbrunnen.

The Staubbach Falls inspired Johann Wolfgang von Goethe to write his Song of the Spirits over the Waters during his second trip to Switzerland in 1779, which he wrote as a guest in the Lauterbrunnen rectory.

"Then foameth brightly,
In cloud-waves rolling,
O'er polished rocks.
Then tranquil flowing,
It wandereth, hiding,
Soft murmuring to depths below it."
