HIPAA stands for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and also known as the Kennedy-Kassebaum bill. HIPAA is United States legislation that provides data privacy and security provisions for safeguarding medical information.

HIPAA Security Rule require the medical personal to protect patient's health information stored in computers by using administrative, physical and technical safeguards to ensure the confidentiality, integrity and security of this information.

These are the requirements for HIPAA compliance.
1. National Provider Identifier Standard - Each healthcare entity must have a unique 10-digit National Provider Identifier number.
2. Transactions and Code Sets Standard - Healthcare organizations must follow a standardized mechanism for electronic data interchange (EDI) to submit and process insurance claims.
3. HIPAA Privacy Rule - to protect patient health information.
4. HIPAA Security Rule - to protect Electronic Protected Health Information (ePHI) for the patient data security.
5. HIPAA Enforcement Rule - is the guidelines for investigations into HIPAA compliance violations.

HIPAA violation refers to the failure to comply with HIPAA rules, which can include unauthorized access, use, or disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI), or failure to provide patients with access to their PHI, or lack of safeguards to protect PHI, or failure to conduct regular risk assessments etc.
