A lot of emotions can come up when we feel that our relationship is threatened or that someone is doing SO much better than us. And when we are growing up most of us are told that feeling or being jealous is bad.. We call it the green eyed monster and try to ignore any of the feelings it gives us. We stuff it down and try to just push forward, but I really think jealousy has been given a bad rep. I believe that if acknowledged, and understood jealousy can really be a good thing.
1. It’s motivating - cause us to want to work harder or feel more motivated for change. It can remind us of what we want and why it’s important. It can push us to try something new or to take that next step.
2. It can help us learn more about ourselves: what we are jealous of helps us see what our next steps may be towards what we want. It can also show us where we need to grow in our own confidence.
3. It can help us realize all that we have. Sure the grass may always seem greener, but if we lean into the jealous feelings and figure out where it’s coming from it can often help us not only change the things we need to change, but even cause us to realize all that we have. If you struggle to turn this into something positive, it can help to talk out your jealous thoughts with a close friend or partner. Sometimes just saying something out loud can shed light on how not true or silly it really is.
