This is Lukas Avendaño, a muxe performer living beyond the gender binary from Tehuantepec, Oaxaca.

But what exactly is muxe—often referred to as Mexico’s “third gender”?

In Zapotec culture, muxes are people assigned male at birth who take on more traditionally feminine roles and characteristics. This identity predates Spanish colonization and remains deeply rooted in Oaxacan traditions.

While muxes are widely recognized and even celebrated within their communities, challenges still exist, such as restrictions on living arrangements with partners. However, acceptance has been growing, with many muxes reporting greater visibility and normalization in society.

That visibility has reached international platforms. Estrella Vázquez became the first Indigenous Zapotec muxe featured on the cover of Vogue. Lady Kero appeared on Drag Race Mexico season 1. Amaranta Gómez Regalado, a trans woman connected to the muxe community, made history in 2003 when she ran for federal deputy at just 25 years old.

From performers and activists to cultural icons, muxes continue to redefine gender norms while honoring Zapotec traditions. Their stories symbolize resilience, representation, and the push for a more inclusive future in Mexico and beyond.
