Kseniya Ryabinkina: The Tragic & Beautiful Story of Raj Kapoor’s 'Marina'
When the classic film "Mera Naam Joker" airs on TV, audiences are captivated by the foreign actress on the trapeze, whose innocence and charm stole hearts. Many might not remember her name, but her face is unforgettable. Today, we're sharing the story of that artist—Russia's renowned ballet dancer and actress, Kseniya Ryabinkina.
Born on September 4, 1945, in Moscow, Kseniya was destined for a life in the arts. Her mother was a ballet dancer, and her father was a geophysics doctor. She was inspired by her mother and older sister, Elena, who was already a famous ballet dancer. Kseniya’s disciplined training led her to Russia's most prestigious stage, the Bolshoi Theatre, where she began her career as a professional ballet dancer.
From Bolshoi Theatre to a Bollywood Star
In the 1960s, Raj Kapoor was in Moscow looking for a foreign trapeze artist for his film "Mera Naam Joker." He saw Kseniya's performance at the Bolshoi Theatre and was mesmerized by her grace and soulful eyes. He immediately decided that she would be his "Marina." Kseniya, then just 24, didn't know Hindi or much about Indian cinema, but she knew Raj Kapoor through his music. She agreed to the role without hesitation.
Her journey as Marina, a trapeze artist who falls in love with Raju (Raj Kapoor’s character), was challenging. A particularly difficult scene required her to cry. Kseniya refused to use glycerin, choosing instead to recall her life’s saddest moments to bring out real tears. She remembers Raj Kapoor as a strict director on set but a kind, caring person off-camera who always looked after her.
A Life of Unconditional Love and Art
After the film’s release, which was a commercial failure but later became a cult classic, Kseniya returned to Russia and continued her passion for ballet. Though she appeared in a few other films, her career truly shone on the stage. She retired from ballet in her 40s, a normal age for dancers.
Her personal life was marked by a deep love for her husband, Alexei Stychkin, whom she married in 1972. His sudden death from a heart attack in 1998 left her heartbroken. She says he was the "only love of her life." Her son, Yevgeny Stychkin, is now a well-known actor in Russia, and her life now revolves around her three grandchildren.
She visited India again in 2009 for the film "Chintuji," starring Rishi Kapoor. This marked a full circle, as she returned to the screen nearly 40 years after working with his father. Today, at 79, Kseniya continues to mentor young artists in Russia, sharing her wealth of experience in both ballet and acting. Her story is not just of a foreign artist, but of a bond that connected the art of Russia and India forever.
