Santa visits babies in the intensive care unit

The big guy from the North Pole made a special stop at University Hospital to visit the babies at the NICU.

Tuesday was a special one for families at University Health. While they may not get to spend the holidays at home, a visit from Santa puts a smile on their faces.

Santa made his way throughout the Women's and Children's Hospital to bring holiday cheer to families with babies in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Although they may be spending it in the hospital, the hospital wanted to make this holiday a special one, especially since it was their first one with their babies.

One mother, Shaira Hernandez, was diagnosed with preeclampsia and other pregnancy complications resulting in having her son Shaul in the hospital a couple of months ago. Having been in the NICU since then, she says that although she and her family have been through some adversities, they are making the most of their first Christmas as a family.

"So, my husband and I made the decision that this Christmas nothing matters but our baby. We've always prayed for him, and being here with him - it’s our biggest gift. And we are trying to make the best out of it and share with him and the nurses and the staff and all the families," said Hernandez.

Hernandez says her message to other new mothers who may be spending Christmas in the hospital is to take it one day at a time and that home is what you make of it.

The photos that the babies took with Santa were made into keepsakes so that the parents would be able to cherish them all year long.
