The 127 specially commissioned coloured full page maps in this impressive atlas form an invaluable visual aid to understanding the ebb and flow of the 11-month Allied advance. They display the physical and defensive features that were often a deciding factor such as the obstructive hedgerows of the Normandy bocage, the flooded lowlands of the Netherlands, the thick woodland of the Hürtgen Forest, the heavily fortified Westwall, and the destroyed bridges over the Rhine. The incisive text is divided into six chapters: The Invasion Front 6th June 1944, The Battle for France June to August 1944, The Battles Along the German Frontier September to December 1944, The Ardennes Campaign December 1944 to January 1945, Battles for the Roer and Rhine February to March 1945 and End Game Against the Third Reich April to May 1945. This marvellous atlas chronicles the campaign in Western Europe from the amphibious landings on D-day to the German capitulation on May 8th 1945. The maps are based on the Osprey Campaign series of books which are primarily focussed on land campaigns. The synchronisation of British and American operational planning remained contentious, with the Americans disdaining British preferences for campaigns in peripheral areas such as North Africa and the Balkans. British military and political leaders warned the Americans of the pitfalls of a hasty intervention on the European mainland.
