About Nuwara Eliya

Location: Nuwara Eliya, is located at a distance of 180km into the central highlands from the capital city of Colombo in the western coast

Reaching Nuwara Eliya: Nuwara Eliya can be reached by main Colombo-Kandy (A1) & then by Peradeniya-Badulla (A5) main road. The nearest railway station to Nuwara Eliya is at Nanu Oya (5km) of Colombo-Badulla main highland railway line.

Setting: At an altitude of 1800 m, Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka's highest town is set amidst rings of hills covered with seamless plantations of tea.

Special significance of Nuwara Eliya: Nuwara Eliya, the tea capital of Central Highlands, is the prime tea growing district of Sri Lanka. Moreover, Nuwara Eliya is the premier holiday resort of the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka among the foreign tourists as well as Sri Lankan tourists. During the months of April (all flowers in full bloom), August, Nuwara Eliya gets onto its good form: festivals ranging from sport car races to pony races and fairs.

Accommodation: Nuwara Eliya has a range of accommodation options ranging from old colonial bunglows converted into top end hotels to mid-range hotels and guest houses.

Nuwara Eliya Town: Nuwara Eliya town encompass sites of little joys: Victoria park, Nuwara Eliya golf course, Lake Gregory, racecourse and Single Tree Mountain. The well maintained 27acre Victoria Park is a mini ornithological hot spot regularly visited by emigrant birds: Kashmir flycatcher, Indian blue robin and pied thrush. Among the birds of Sri Lanka you would see there are Sri Lanka white-eye, yellow-eared bulbul and the dull-blue flycatcher.

Nuwara Eliya Golf Course: Nuwara Eliya's neatly maintained lovely sylvan golf course is situated opposite the park. Spread over 90 acres, the 18 holes golf course has been famous venue in Asia since the colonial era.

Nuwara Eliya Race Course: Nuwara Eliya race course where the one and only horse racing event of Sri Lanka is held draw in Sri Lanka's well-to do crowd from Colombo.

Lake Gregory: Beyond the racecourse is Lake Gregory, which would soon operate luxury river boats.


Due to the high altitude, Nuwara Eliya has a much cooler climate than the lowlands of Sri Lanka, with a mean annual temperature of 16 °C. But the temperature changes and sometimes it can be like 3°C. In the winter months it is quite cold at night, and there can even be frost. Although it rapidly warms up as the tropical sun climbs higher during the day.

Sinhala and Tamil is the major language spoken in the Nuwara Eliya. The population is a mixture of Sinhalese, Tamil and the Moors. Many tea plantation workers are Indian Tamils, brought over to Sri Lanka by the British in the 19th century.

Horton Plains National Park and Victoria Park are main attraction in Nuwara Eliya.
