PS5 Pro - The Only Thing that Matters

PS5’s hardware CEO, Hidieki Nashino was asked why console still matters compared to PC and what he said is exactly what I’ve been saying for months

“I think that many mobile games have ads, and PCs are difficult to set up,” says Nishino. “With PS, you can play the content you purchased as soon as you turn it on. The products are clearly displayed in the stores where you buy software, so it’s an intuitive experience.”

The interviewer pushed back saying a lot of Sony’s biggest games are on PC now and he kept going

“We are trying to increase the overall game market by expanding content to PCs,” he says. “There is no doubt that home consoles will be the core of our business, but by offering titles for devices other than home consoles, we will reach a wider range of customers.”

This answer is great because it hits two major criticisms of the PS5

First, on convenience, he’s just right.

I saw a graph last night that showed the steady rise of PC gamers ended right around 2023 while consoles continued their upward trajectory

and that really hit home because that’s right when I hit my limit with PC gaming

Not only did I get sick of having to sit at a desk using a smaller monitor than my TV with a controller

But my controller didn’t work half the time so I’d have to quit the game, go into Steam settings and activate Steam input which is nice, but then all the button prompts were for an Xbox controller

Then once I got into the game, despite my great hardware, I’d say 99% of the time I’d have to drop the settings from where the game picked them because I’d be getting frame drops

And then finally, so many ports whether it was Outriders, The Last of Us Part I, Dead Space, Jedi Survivor, Darktide, Dragon’s Dogma 2, launched not only buggier than their console counterparts, but they’d take years to fix if at all

So instead of playing games I was playing tech support for a game I bought for full price and sometimes paid more money for to get early access

And that brings us to what he said about the mobile and PC market

It seems like he understands that some people, no matter how good of an experience you give them, will never buy a console once they have a PC

They’re perfectly happy to wait for ports, so meet them where they’re at by porting PS games later and reward the console players with early games and convenient experiences

State of Play Incoming?

Jeff Grubb is reporting that there will be a State of Play on or around the date of September 24th, so next week.

There is a lot that could be announced to salvage the burned goodwill of diehard PlayStation fans.

Resident Evil 9, Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica.

Astro Bot DLC

Ghost of Tsushima 2

Venom Standalone title

Spider-Man 2 DLC

Wolverine Gameplay and Release Date

Death Stranding 2 Gameplay and Release Date

The unannounced game that Cory Barlog has been working on at Santa Monica since around 2018

Housemarque’s followup to Returnal

The multiple projects from Bluepoint

And of course a deeper dive on Fairgame$ and an announcement of Bend Studios' next title

I’d love to see a surprise return of games like Killzone, SOCOM or Resistance

People are not happy with the direction of this generation and as we’ve seen in the late PS3 and entire PS4 generation, the best way to recover and build new goodwill is to announce games that get people excited.

I think Sony would be smart to stick to their strategy of keeping PC ports mostly separate from State of Play events, announcing them in the days after as standalone blog posts.

Key point: Sony really needs a win right now and if they want people to forget that they’re upset, they have a huge opportunity right now to make that happen.
